Tagging To-Do's as Done
23. Apr 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)Just a short blog post to announce that in the new version 5.46 you can now indicate if a to-do has been done, or the percentage completed. This feature has been requested a few times. Personally I just delete done to-do's but I guess everybody works differently. After uploading the new files don't forget to run the file setup.php which will add a new field to the to-do table.
New Logo and Captcha functionality
06. Mar 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)As you've problem noticed already we've got a new logo for the Blue Smiley Organizer. Thanks to Amine who designed it. The first design looks a bit different, you wonder what the smiley has been smoking with that smile. :)
I've also released a new version with Captcha functionality for the sign up page. Amine has requested it since he was flooded with new user sign ups. If you have any other ideas how to improve the script and make it the best open source organizer please let me know.
Live Support Module
01. Mar 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)If you are using the Live Support chat in the Blue Smiley Organizer you are strongly recommended to upgraded to the newest version 5.44. This fixes a bug which caused Firefox to stop updating the chat window if the connection to the server dropped.
The Live Chat feature enables you to chat with your website visitors. All you need to do is put some HTML code on your website which will indicate if you are logged into the organizer and available for support chat.
If you want something more fancy looking and with more features I recommend ProvideSupport for Live Support. Not free though, but cheaper than the more popular Liveperson service.
Bookmark Manager Number 2 on Google
25. Feb 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)The other day I've checked how the Blue Smiley Organizer ranks on Google for the term "bookmark manager". I was quite surprised that it ranked on number one for a while. It has since then dropped to number two, but I'm still happy to rank so well even though there must be hundreds of websites which offer to store bookmarks online.
One reason the site is ranking so well for bookmark manager is probably that people link with the URL which includes the word bookmark manager of course. If you are interested in SEO and ranking visit my Internet Marketing Tips website at Daily-Internet-Marketing-Tips.com.
At the moment the BKM Bookmark Manager is number one, but from what I can see the project has been dormant for many years now. Here's a screenshot:
The current version of the Blue Smiley Organizer is 5.42, which include a "Create Link" feature in the Blog section. I've also improved the Files section a little bit. Also new is list view for notes, knowledge, blog and diary.
News Features: RSS feed item limits & text area resizer
12. Feb 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)I've released a new version 5.39 which enables to limit RSS feeds items. For instance some RSS feeds return 20 items. Now you can limit this to a specific number like 5 or 10.
Thanks to Zane for this suggestion, see forum.

Another feature I've been experimenting with is to increase / decrease the size of the textarea when adding or editing todo's, knoweldge, notes, etc. This might be very useful when working with long texts. This resize feature isn't yet in the downloadable code, but you can test it on the official website.
tar.gz File for Blue Smiley Organizer
21. Jan 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)I'm now offering the Blue Smiley Script as a tar.gz package on the usual download page. I'm quite surprised that the tar.gz file (334 KB) is much smaller than the zip file (540 KB). So much for efficiency under Windows. ;-)

Since I'm using Windows to work with I've found a nice free program called PeaZip to generate tar.gz packages. Check it out.

Is the Design of the Blue Smiley too Simple?
17. Jan 2008 | Permalink | Comments (2)Once in a while someone will contact me and says he likes my organizer script and would like to co-operate with me. Today a guy wanted my programming skills in exchange for his designer skills. However I don't really enjoy working for other people so I wasn't really interested. But it seems that many people think that the design of the Blue Smiley Organizer is a bit too simple. If someone is using the script and wants to give back I'm open for design suggestions, especially the logo could be better. I'd rather have somebody design a logo who uses the script than somebody who has never heard of the Blue Smiley Organizer.
Blog Comment notification problem
15. Jan 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)If you are using the blog of the Blue Smiley Organizer please update your script since there was a bug in the notification feature when new comments are posted. Probably not many people are using the integrated blog since Wordpress is by far superior but just in case some people are using it.
Global tags for every item in the Organizer
15. Jan 2008 | Permalink | Comments (0)One new interesting new feature would be "global tags" for all items. Then if you click on one tag it would show all notes, todos, reminder etc tagged with that word. Not sure yet if that would really add some value to the script or make things unnecessary complicated.
Another user in our forum suggested to use favicons in the bookmark list, so it looks more "visually appealing".

Anyway just let me know what you think, just add a blog comment.
I'm also focusing on Blue Smiley topics only on this blog from now on, so don't forget to subscribe to the RSS feed to get updates. I recommend the RSS Reader from Google to organize your RSS Feeds.

Sharing items - Getting more like a Groupware
02. Jan 2008 | Permalink | Comments (2)In recent months I've slowed down adding new features for the Blue Smiley Organizer since I was feeling a bit burned out. Also I wasn't sure if there was enough interest in my script to justify all the work needed to keep it up-to-date. However the other day a guy called Chris emailed me and said he really like my organizer script but he wanted not only public links but also public notes, knowledge, contacts, files, etc. He also told me that he installed the script through the server software Zervex which was quite interesting to know. Never heard of Zervex before but I was really happy about the interest in my organizer script.
Anyway I've implemented the public notes, knowledge, contacts and files in the new version 5.37, still quite beta though, but it should work. The only drawback is that you can only share with all people or none. You can not share with a specific person at the moment. I'm not sure if I will do that in the future because that would complicate things for both the user and for me of course. But its another step towards a true groupware solution. Another new feature are RSS Feeds for your To-Do list which means you can read them through your mobile phone. Anyway looking forward to your feedback.
